Botulinum Toxin Injections (Botox)

Botulinum Toxin injections utilize either Botox®, Xeomin® or Dysport® products to weaken or paralyze various muscles of the face temporarily to minimize or reverse wrinkle formation.

Facial wrinkles occur either due to the action of facial muscles on the skin or from a combination of other factors (sun exposure, genetics, smoking, etc.). In weakening or paralyzing various muscles of the face, the overlying skin is able to relax, which decreases the depth of existing wrinkles or prevents future wrinkle formation.

Botulinum toxin injections are well-tolerated in the office with few to no side effects experienced by most patients.

How do botox injections work?

Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® act to relax the muscles that produce dynamic wrinkles.  Dynamic wrinkles are those wrinkles caused by the activity of the facial muscles (e.g., frowning, squinting, smiling, and raising the eyebrows).

What parts of the face can be treated with botox injections?

Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® are used primarily to treat frown lines, crow’s feet lines, and/or forehead lines. They may also be used to treat vertical lip lines, horizontal neck bands (for some patients), and droopy outer corners of the mouth.

How is a botox injection administered?

Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® are administered with very small needles, which allow for a relatively fast and painless injection.

What can you expect during a consultation?

During your consultation, Dr. Pero will ask you about your aesthetic goals and will review your medical history with you.  He may ask you specific questions about:

  • Any medications you are currently taking, including any over-the-counter medications
  • Any plans you may have for future surgeries
  • Any medical conditions you may have, including muscle or nerve conditions

For women, you should let Dr. Pero know if you are currently pregnant, planning to get pregnant or are breastfeeding.

You should also let Dr. Pero know if you have had any other Botulinum Toxin treatments in the last 4 months

After a thorough review of your medical history, Dr. Pero will determine if Botulinum Toxin injections are right for you. If it is, he will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment areas for you.

How many treatments will you need?

The number of treatment sessions you will need depends on your goals and needs. During your consultation, you can discuss this and any questions you may have with Dr. Pero, so you have a clear understanding of your proposed treatment plan.

Botox Treatment - FAQs

What is the difference between Botulinum Toxin products?

Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® are all botulinum toxin (better known as botox) products, and they are the only muscle relaxants approved by the FDA for cosmetic use.

Botox® is the registered trademark of the toxin produced by Allergan, Xeomin® is the registered trademark name of the toxin produced by Merz. Dysport® is the registered trademark name of the toxin produced by Medicis.

The main difference between Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® is the potency of trace proteins, which may make one treatment more effective than the other for some people.

Can botox injections be combined with other cosmetic procedures?

Yes, Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® can be combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as facelift or eyelid surgery, for an improved appearance.

How long does a treatment session take?

A treatment session usually takes 10 minutes to be administered.

Are the injections painful?

Most patients say the injection feels like a pinch to the skin. If you are concerned about discomfort, a topical numbing cream can be applied before administering your treatment.

Is there any down time after treatment?

Most patients tolerate the treatment very well and return to their normal activities or work immediately after treatment. You should refrain from any strenuous activity or exercise for the rest of the day, though.

Is there any swelling after treatment?

There is usually minimal swelling after treatment. Swelling usually subsides within 2 hours of treatment. You may apply an ice pack to the area treated to reduce any local swelling.

How soon will you start to see the effects of treatment?

You will start to notice the effects of treatment within 1 to 3 days.  Full effect may take 2 weeks to be seen.

How long do results last?

Results from your injections usually last up to 3 or 4 months.

How long should you wait between treatments?

It is recommended that you wait at least 90 days before you have another Botulinum Toxin treatment.

On rare occasions, botulinum toxicity may be seen. Signs of this serious side effect include breathing, speaking, and swallowing difficulties.

Are Botulinum Toxin injections safe?

Botulinum Toxin injections are safe for qualified candidates. Please alert Dr. Pero if you have any medical conditions, especially any affecting the nervous systems or muscles.
