Skin Cancer Reconstruction

Skin cancer has become an increasingly common problem in the United States, with more than 1 million cases being diagnosed each year! Most skin cancers form in sun-exposed areas, meaning the face, head and neck are common sites of occurrence. The most common treatment for skin cancers involves their surgical removal. That said, concerns about the post-operative defect or scarring is common.

To minimize post-operative scarring and deformity, Dr. Pero pairs with a Mohs Surgeon, who is a fellowship trained dermatologist that performs the removal of the cancerous lesion. With their advanced techniques, they are able to perform a complete removal of the lesion with preservation of as much healthy tissue as is possible. This helps minimize the size of the defect that needs repaired. Patients are then sent to Dr. Pero for reconstruction of the lesion. Using a variety of skin grafts (removal of tissue and transplanting elsewhere in the body) and/or flaps (moving nearby or adjacent tissue), Dr. Pero designs a reconstructive plan to minimize long-term functional or cosmetic defects that can often be completed in the office.
